Student Code of Conduct

Our Student Code of Conduct outlines the expectations and standards of behaviour for all students. By adhering to this Code, you help us maintain a safe, inclusive, and productive learning environment where everyone can thrive.

Guiding Principles

Our Code of Conduct is built upon GCA’s core values, promoting:

  • Mutual respect and integrity in all interactions.
  • A strong commitment to academic excellence and scholarly integrity.
  • Responsibility for your actions and their impact on others.
  • Your contribution to a safe and supportive community.
  • An appreciation of diversity and inclusion within our community.

 

This Code applies to all GCA students, whether you’re studying on campus, online, or at a distance. It covers your conduct:

  • On GCA premises or campus.
  • In virtual learning environments and digital platforms.
  • During GCA-sponsored activities and events.
  • During professional placements.
  • In your communications with any GCA community members.
  • Off-campus, if your behavior adversely affects the GCA community or its reputation.

Prohibited Conduct

Certain behaviours are considered misconduct and are strictly prohibited. These include:

Academic Misconduct

This involves any action that may create an unfair academic advantage for yourself or others, such as:

  • Cheating, plagiarism, contract cheating, or other forms of academic dishonesty.
  • Unauthorised collaboration on academic work.
  • Falsification of academic records, data, or documents.
  • Interference with another student’s academic work.
  • Unauthorised access to academic materials or systems.

 

Disruptive Behaviour

This refers to any conduct that interferes with the learning environment or GCA operations, including:

  • Interference with teaching, research, administration, or other GCA activities.
  • Behaviour that impedes others’ ability to participate in GCA activities.
  • Disorderly conduct in any GCA setting or activity.
  • Failure to comply with reasonable directions from GCA staff.
  • Unauthorised recording, dissemination, or publication of academic materials.

 

Health and Safety Violations

Actions that endanger the well-being of others or violate safety protocols are prohibited:

  • Actions that endanger the health or safety of any person.
  • Possession of weapons, dangerous chemicals, or explosive materials.
  • Violation of public health protocols or safety regulations.
  • Tampering with safety equipment or facilities.
  • Creating health hazards or unsanitary conditions.

 

Damage to Property

This includes any actions related to GCA property or the property of others:

  • Vandalism or destruction of GCA property or the property of others.
  • Theft or unauthorised possession of GCA property or the property of others.
  • Unauthorised entry into or use of GCA facilities.
  • Misuse of GCA resources, equipment, or networks.
  • Unauthorised duplication or possession of keys, access cards, or identification.

 

Interpersonal Misconduct

We are committed to a respectful and inclusive environment, and prohibit:

  • Physical aggression or violence toward any person.
  • Harassment, bullying, stalking, or intimidation.
  • Sexual misconduct, including sexual assault and sexual harassment.
  • Hazing or harmful initiation activities.
  • Discrimination based on protected characteristics (including race, gender, disability, etc.).
  • Retaliation against individuals who report misconduct.
  • Making false allegations against members of the GCA community.

 

Alcohol and Drugs

Regulations regarding alcohol and drugs on GCA premises and during activities must be followed:

  • Unauthorised possession, use, or distribution of alcohol on GCA premises.
  • Being visibly intoxicated during GCA activities or on GCA premises.
  • Possession, use, or distribution of illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia.
  • Misuse of prescription medications.
  • Providing alcohol to underage individuals.

 

Compliance Violations

All students are expected to comply with GCA policies and procedures:

  • Violation of GCA policies, procedures, or agreements.
  • Failure to identify oneself when requested by authorised personnel.
  • Providing false information to GCA representatives.
  • Misuse of GCA documents or identification.
  • Failure to participate in or obstruction of disciplinary proceedings.
  • Unauthorised representation of GCA.

 

Digital Conduct and Information Technology

Your conduct in digital environments is also covered:

  • Unauthorised access to GCA IT systems or accounts.
  • Use of GCA IT resources for unauthorised or illegal purposes.
  • Violations of IT policies, including acceptable use policies.
  • Online harassment or cyberbullying.
  • Misrepresentation of identity in electronic communications.
  • Distribution of malicious software or disruption of network services.

Reporting Misconduct

If you suspect misconduct, please report it to the designated authority. Reports should be made in good faith with reasonable grounds to believe misconduct occurred. GCA prohibits retaliation against individuals who report misconduct. While anonymous reports may be considered, please be aware that this may limit our ability to investigate thoroughly.

Resolution Procedures

Allegations of misconduct are addressed according to the procedures outlined in the Student Conduct Policy. These procedures ensure:

  • Prompt notification of allegations.
  • A fair opportunity to respond to any allegations.
  • An impartial investigation.
  • Decisions based on the preponderance of evidence.
  • Proportionate sanctions when violations are found.
  • Appeal rights for significant sanctions.

 

Support During Proceedings

Students involved in misconduct proceedings have access to support services, including:

  • Confidential advice from the Student Advocacy Service.
  • The option to be accompanied by a support person in meetings and hearings.
  • Access to counselling and other support services.
  • The ability to request accommodations for disabilities or special circumstances.

Sanctions

Violations of this Code may result in various sanctions, which can include, but are not limited to:

  • Warning or reprimand.
  • Educational intervention.
  • Restitution for damages.
  • Restrictions on privileges or activities.
  • Probation with conditions.
  • Suspension from specific activities or programs.
  • Temporary suspension from GCA.
  • Expulsion in the most serious cases.

Commitment to an Educational Approach

GCA views the conduct process as an opportunity for education and growth. Where appropriate, we may use educational interventions and restorative practices to address misconduct, supporting your academic progress and development while ensuring accountability.
