Bush Fire Appeal Fundraiser

  • The shocking bushfires that swept across Victoria in February 2009 prompted GCA students to fundraise for the Red Cross Bush Fire Appeal. Staff and student donations resulted in $1235 being raised. The cheque was presented to Red Cross by members of the St James College Student Representative Council.

The Queensland Variety Bash

  • In 2009 GCA joined a number of ACPET member colleges in Sponsoring Daisy, a 1979 Mercedes Benz that embarked on the Queensland Variety Bash Rally from Townsville to Alice Springs. “The Bash”, which has been running since 1985 raises money for Variety, the Children’s Charity which supports sick, disabled or disadvantaged children.

OXFAM

  • An ongoing community program with an international focus begun in 2007 and run by the high school has been the purchasing of “gifts” for overseas communities through Oxfam. St James students are fined between $0.20 cents and $1 for speaking their first language inappropriately in class. When the fine money is collected the Student Representative Council decide which community gifts will be purchased.
  • In 2009 fine money was used to purchase “useful gifts” through Oxfam including: Literacy classes in Cambodia; Seeds in East Timor; Ducks in Bali; A Veggie Garden in Mozambique
